Good morning from The Garden!

Listen, my son (daughter) to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teachings…”  Proverbs 1:8.

This is an appropriate scripture this morning as I reflect on the life of my mom who went to her heavenly home 8 years ago at the wonderful age of 95 (well, two weeks from 95.)

My mom in no way was perfect, but her imperfections are not memorable.  Most of her life with us is full of good memories and sound advice.

My mom’s advice was more the way she lived than verbal adages.  She always taught me to be kind, to see the best in everyone, to forgive even when it hurts, to be content with what you have, to treasure friends, to put God first and then everything else.

The words of advice I remember most are “Diane, stand up straight” and “Be careful.”  She said this every time I left the house. She would always grab my knife and hand me a spoon and say “Remember, don’t gouge the jelly!”  Now that is advice worth remembering.  I still do the same thing.  She always told me to “pick my battles carefully; you may not win.”  I give this advice to others.  I think it really makes a difference in relationships.

My mom showed me the way to keep the mind clear and healthy:  She was an avid reader.  She read a book a night.  She studied the Bible and lived the life that God directed in His Word.  She debated others who disagreed with her with kindness but stood fast in what she believed.  She played cards with friends and games with children. The best advice my mom ever gave me was to be proud of who I am and to love others.

I pray today that in some ways I have followed this advice.  And I am thankful that God blessed me with a wise and wonderful mom.

Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised……”  Proverbs 31:30.

“……Her children arise and call her blessed……”  Proverbs 31:28

Have a blessed day!

In Christian love,

Diane
