Israel and Judah became a divided kingdom after the death of King Solomon. Many kings ruled both kingdoms. Some of them were good, but many of them used their own power and selfishness to destroy what was right in the sight of the Lord. And, of course, as you know from Bible history, these selfish actions led to the destruction of the very land that was promised to the Hebrew people many years before.
One of the kings that is not often mentioned is King Jehu. When he became king, he destroyed one kind of idolatry, the worship of Baal. But he continued to worship the golden calves set up by Jeroboam.
Jehu was a little devoted to God. He was devoted only when it was beneficial to him and his power. “Yet, Jehu was not careful to keep the law of the Lord, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam, which he had caused Israel to commit.” 2 Kings10:31.
Giving God a little when it is convenient is not the goal of a Christian who loves God with the whole heart. “Thou shalt love the Lord your God with all your heart.….…” Mark 29:30. Each Christian shepherds a flock. Each Christian has a responsibility to grow in the knowledge of Christ and also has an opportunity to influence others and to guide them in the right direction.
We can’t just serve God as Jehu did—-out of convenience or just for personal gain.
“Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers—not greedy for money, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.” 1 Peter 5:2-4.
The right reason leads to the right action which leads to right life.
