I love being a daughter! Although my parents are no longer with me here, they are still my parents, and I am still their daughter and that feels special. I must continue to honor them in all that I do.
I am equally proud to be a mother. I had a chance to nurture my children and guide them–to watch them grow into responsible adults and honorable parents themselves. The cycle goes on.
“HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” Exodus 20:12 and Deuteronomy 5:16.
This command was so important that it made #5 on the top ten list of God’s Commandments. It is the first commandment with a promise attached, and the first commandment that has to do with man’s relationship to man.
God knew that for a nation to survive, the family must be strong. And a family can be strong only if HONOR is a priority.
What does it mean to “HONOR” our parents? It means acting in a way that shows them courtesy and respect. It means speaking well of them and politely to them. It means taking care of them even when they cannot take care of you. It means following their examples of putting God first.
Honoring involves all that sons and daughters do with their own lives–the way they live, the way they work, the way they talk, the values they hold, the places they go, and the morals they practice.
“Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do.“—Obeying our parents is our main task when we are young, but honoring them lasts a lifetime and continues even beyond their death.
Have a blessed day!
In Christian love,
