Abraham and Lot had a special relationship. Even though Lot was Abraham’s nephew, he treated him like a son or a brother.
When Abraham sensed that a dispute was brewing, he took the initiative to solve the problem before it became a problem.
“Let’s not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herdsmen and mine, for we are brothers.” Genesis 13:8
Abraham was the older and could have had his choice of land, but instead, he let Lot choose first. I’m sure that Abraham did not like Lot’s decision, but he honored it.
Abraham’s example shows us how to respond to difficult family situations:
We should take the initiative to resolve the conflict. If it doesn’t work, we keep trying, if possible. When it can’t be solved, we have to move on and never let another bring us down or ruin our peaceful relationship with God.
We should let others have first choice even if it means not getting what we want.
We should put family peace above personal desire. We don’t have to “like” but God demands that we LOVE.
“We love because He first loved us.” 1 John 4:19
Have a blessed day!
