Possibly the most powerful parable Jesus ever told was the story of the Prodigal Son. After the young son had demanded his inheritance, left home, and squandered everything, he returned home, hoping to be taken in by his father as a servant.
But to his surprise, “While he was a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.” Luke 15:20.
Obviously the father had spent many long hours searching the horizon for the return of his wayward son. He didn’t make him take those last steps alone. He ran to meet him.
The older brother(who had stayed home with his father, worked hard, and faithfully increased his inheritance)returned from the field and heard the celebration. He remained outside the house because he was upset that his brother had returned with such great fanfare.
The father met him outside the house and reminded him of all the blessings he had enjoyed that the younger brother had missed.
“The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him—–My son, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours–“ Luke 15:31.
Whether you are the prodigal son or the resentful brother, God, the loving father, will always meet you where you are and invite you to join him
