Remember the little bird that decided to go off on its own in my story from Friday. Well I noticed it late the next day resting in the grass all alone in the front yard. Fearing for its safety, I reached down and picked it up. The small bundle of fluff suddenly came to life and started screeching and flapping its wings. Before I could put it down, out of nowhere the mother blue jay (or maybe the father) swooped down and attacked me. I was surprised, to say the least, shaken a little, but unharmed.
This incident taught me a valuable lesson in life. We are often misunderstood in our actions. I had this deep desire to try to explain to the mother bird that I meant no harm to her young. I only wanted to help. I wanted to be Dr. Doolittle just long enough to explain.
Have you ever felt that way with another person? What you intended for good, seemed to be interpreted as hurtful? You wished you could find the right words to make things better. Only to find that things seem to get worse. This sometimes happens in any relationship even parent/child.
“By wisdom a house is built, and through UNDERSTANDING it is established.” Proverbs 24: 3-4.
Misunderstanding can sever a relationship. Communicate openly with one another–after all you do speak the same language, right? —Don’t just build a relationship, establish it. Something that is established is solid, durable, long-lasting.
Speak openly with love.
Let’s again remember 1 Corinthians 13: 4, 7 “Love is patient, love is kind; It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”
